Studio Build #6 – Electricity, Network & Ventilation

Connecting To The Outside World
The studio is around 50 meters away from the house. So it took about 60 meters of cables to connect both electricity and the gigabit ethernet network.

Since the studio is connected to the Internet, remote musicians can be invited to play together with the band in the studio.
Inside the Studio
In order to avoid air gaps in the walls, I chose to place all cables outside of the walls. This system avoids holes in the walls and lets you make changes later without destroying the insulation… I made an exception for the lights, as it would have been really too ugly on the ceiling, and I don’t plan to move the light every day anyway!

I have also added ethernet plugs everywhere, as I plan to use my own network audio software to connect all instruments together (there are no audio cables in there!).

Let there be light!

Passive Ventilation
The studio is completely sealed for sound proofing, but the human beings playing inside need fresh air to breathe… That’s why some kind of ventilation is required!
I am not a fan (pun intended…) of active ventilation for many reasons (waste of energy, noise, maintenance….), so I would like to try a passive ventilation system instead. If it’s not sufficient, I will be able to add fans later.
The idea is to get air coming from the room below, and going outside below the roof (hot air). It is also a good way to keep the incoming air cool in summer and not too cold in winter.
To avoid noise to go thru, I have used long flexible pipes in contact with the wood wool, with at least two angles, both for incoming and outcoming streams.

Results: fresh air is flowing, nobody has died inside yet. Surprisingly, sound does not propagate at all, it works very well! And with appropriate grills, it’s visually nice too:

Note: I even had to partly close the inputs in winter, as too much fresh air was coming in, making the room harder to heat!
Next step: actually work on the sound of the studio, at last, with acoustic treatments!
